Lee County Emergency Medical Services in cooperation with the American Heart Association is looking for communities, organizations and businesses that are positioned or prepared for a Heart-related emergency. Through criteria originating from the American Heart Association and refined by Lee County EMS, communities, organizations and businesses can achieve "Heart Ready" status.

In addition to all the inherent benefits of being "Heart Ready", communities, organizations and businesses will realize additional benefits from Lee County EMS for attatining and maintaining this status.

How to become a Heart Ready Community or Organization

The criteria for becoming a Heart Ready Community or Organization is still under development/consideration. Criteria that might be part of a Heart Ready Community include:

  • Provide CPR/AED courses to employees and/or public
    -for a determined percentage of employees or public are provided the course
  • Perform regularly scheduled updates or information to the community
  • Prepare and educate employees or public on a designed emergency action plan
  • Demonstrate leadership for promotion of quality AED programs in the community
  • Provide instructor-training for an in-house employee or community member
  • Provide course textbooks to employees or public
  • Provide regularly scheduled interim training updates for key members
  • Perform regularly scheduled maintenance of the AED
  • Provide annual updates to Lee County EMS on the status of the AED program in the specific community
  • Sponsor a nearby community with their AED program
  • Integrate CPR/AED training into the new employee or resident orientation program
  • Report on the use of the AED in the event of a cardiac emergency, not with specifics of the patient outcome, but on the process
  • Where possible and where deemed appropriate by the patient or patient's family, report on the patient outcome

  • Perform at least two annual mock drills to test and measure the effectiveness of your designed emergency action plan
